Vietnam Traveller Requirements (2025 Edition)
If you're planning a trip to Vietnam, understanding the country's entry rules is essential to ensure your journey is smooth and stress-free. Here’s everything you need to know before you pack your bags.
Passport Requirements
All travelers must hold a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity from their intended date of entry. This rule applies to tourists, business travelers, and transiting passengers alike.
** Important:
National ID cards, citizen identity cards, or expired passports are not accepted as substitutes for international travel to Vietnam. You must present a valid passport to cross the border.
Visa Options for Travelers
Depending on your nationality, travel purpose, and length of stay, you must hold either:
-
A valid Vietnam visa (eVisa or Visa on Arrival).
-
A visa exemption (if your country is eligible).
-
A 5-Year Visa Exemption Certificate (for Vietnamese expatriates and family members).
For travelers applying for a visa, the following options are available:
-
Vietnam eVisa:
Apply online, valid for single or multiple entries up to 90 days. Fast and convenient for most short-term trips. -
Visa on Arrival (VOA):
For air travelers only. Apply online for an Approval Letter, pick up your visa at the airport on arrival. -
Emergency Visa:
Expedited service for urgent situations — often processed within a few hours. -
5-Year Visa Exemption Certificate:
Available for overseas Vietnamese and their immediate family, allowing multiple entries and long stays.
Arrival & Departure Procedures
When arriving in Vietnam:
-
Prepare your visa documents (Approval Letter, printed eVisa, or exemption proof).
-
Complete the arrival form (if required at your port of entry).
-
Be ready for passport control inspection.
When leaving Vietnam:
-
Make sure your visa is still valid.
-
Overstaying your visa can result in fines or legal action.
-
Exit using the same passport used for entry.
Legalization of Documents
For travelers or expats handling official paperwork, some countries benefit from a consular legalization exemption agreement with Vietnam. This applies to documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and court records issued by foreign governments.
For others, legalization at the Vietnamese Embassy in the issuing country may still be required.
Travel Tip:
If you’re unsure whether you need a visa or what documentation you should prepare, it’s always best to check in advance or work with a trusted visa service provider.
